Unusual and Familiar Plants—over 1100 varieties

For plants you can trust, come to…

Cottage Garden Plants, Shrubs, Bedding and more

We specialise in growing a wide range of unusual and more familiar herbaceous perennials (“cottage garden plants”) and shrubs, plus grasses, ferns, bedding, other seasonal colour and vegetable/tomato plants.

Hardy, Lime Tolerant Plants

Almost all are hardy and lime tolerant—all our plants are carefully labelled with cultural details, and the few tender or acid-loving plants are clearly identified.

Advice on Suitable Plants and Their Care

As we grow the plants ourselves, we can advise you about their needs, care and how they grow.  Some are familiar, but many can’t be found in garden centres, although they’re good, easy to grow garden plants.

We grow our plants “hard”, in conditions fairly close to natural ones.  They grow more slowly than plants grown in hothouses and become more robust than if they’re grown “soft” (fast, hot, and overfed).   Plants grown this way take longer to reach saleable size (which is our problem) but end up tougher (to your benefit).

Blooming Marvellous Plants List

The plants we’re growing for sale during 2007 can be seen through the links to the left.

For our full plant list, please email alex@bmplants.co.uk and we’ll be happy to send you the latest list in easily viewable format.  Sorry we can’t automate this feature yet— we will be able to when we

re-design the whole site in MS Frontpage.

Growing Our Own Plants

Please note that due to the practicalities of growing our own plants, not all varieties will be available at all times.  If you’re hoping for a particular plant, please ask.  It may not be in the sales area, but we will be happy to fetch some for you from the growing areas if they have reached a suitable size for planting.

Vine weevils

I bet you didn’t expect to see the words “vine weevil” on a nursery’s web site!  Many gardens now have vine weevils in them, perhaps introduced in plants their owners have bought.  Their larvae can kill a plant in weeks, by eating the central roots.

We are proud to say that we are vine weevil free!  This is not by chance, but is because we put into our compost a residual vine weevil killer (‘Vinil’, which has the same active ingredient, ‘Fipronil’, as the ‘Frontline’ flea killer I use to treat my dog and cats! ). Vinil lasts 6-12 months and makes sure that if any of the adults fly in to lay their eggs, their young will die when they hatch.  Doing this is not cheap for us, but is an example of how much we care about producing quality plants that will grow well for you in your garden.
